2008 Weihai Shangdong Aosai Cup National Triathlon Championships

6 SEPTEMBER

Lee Chi Wo from Hong Kong was piped at the post to finish 2nd in the elite male category at the China NATIONAL Triathlon Championships in WeiHai this morning.
53 Triathletes from 32 provinces completed over a 2 loop (750M) sea swim, followed by a 5-lap bike course (8k), which included 1k tough hill climb. The run was undulating with 4 loops (2.5k). Weather conditions were between 25oC with temperatures of >30oC on the run.

For the first 100m and last 100m of the each swim lap, all the triathletes had to run with high legs  over the waves because it was low tide and too shallow to swim. After 750m Daniel was in 2nd position and Ricco 4th but by the end of 1500m swim Daniel was the only Hk triathlete left with the lead group of 15. Lemuel came out of the water around 1min 15secs behind Daniel with a pack of 6 triathletes.
On the bike the lead pack of 18 triathletes including Daniel gained approx. 50 seconds per lap on the chasing packs. By 30k the 2nd and 3 rd packs had merged and this pack included all the other HK Triathletes: Lemuel, Ivan, Dickson, Samuel, Ricco and Ho Kin Fun. By the end of 40k they were over 4mins behind the lead pack.
Daniel started the run with a careful pace by not pushing too hard and by 2.5 k a group of 6 had a lead of 20 seconds. By 8k this group was reduced to 4 triathletes and the lead was continually changing but when Daniel kicked for the line with  100m to go, he only dropped 2 of the 3 Chinese triathletes and Chen Lim surged again and crossed the line in first place.   Lemuel who was the 2nd HK triathlete to finish battled hard for top 15th position. All the other HK triathletes were racing against each other and the next one to finish was Dickson Tam.

Daniel said I felt strong on the swim and bike today. Also running for nearly 300m in the water helped me keep near the near the front in the swim. However, for the run I should do some faster intervals so I can finish faster. Chen Lim was protected by his team today and that would have saved his legs for the final sprint.
