The Asian Triathlon Championships are held over 2 days with the 3 Male Elite races (Junior, U23 and Elite) and Age group event been held today on May 2nd and all the Elite Female races held on May 3rd.

For the first time in his Triathlon career Andrew Wright from Hong Kong beat Lee Chi Wo by 2 seconds in the elite male category in Guangzhou this morning. Andrew finished 11th and Daniel finished 12 position. This is the 17th year of the event. 40 Triathletes from 15 Asian countries were competing in this event. The triathletes raced in heavy rain over a 2 loop (750M) lake swim and they then headed out onto a 6-lap very technical bike course (6.67k), which and this was followed by a 4 loop (2.5k) undulating run course.

After one lap of the swim, Andrew Wright was in 11th position just ahead of Daniel. During the 2nd lap Daniel dropped off the pace and came out of the water 1min behind Andrew in 20:02. Andrew just missed the main pack of 10 onto the bike and was left in no man’s land with 2 triathletes.

Daniel and Samuel Leung who were both in the pack chasing caught Andrew’s group on Lap 2. The lead pack including 3 top triathletes from Asia – R. Yamamoto and Tayama from Japan and Sapunov from Kaz., all worked together to make a lead of 2minutes onto the run.

Daniel and Andrew ran together for the whole 10k run with Andrew (34:48) out sprinting Daniel (34:51) to the finish.

With reference to qualifying for the Olympics in BEIJING, Daniel only lost 13 points to Andrew and he still leads Andrew by 263 points with 2 races to go.
